Edge shifts (Delta E), effective nuclear charge (Z(eff)) and % covalency fo
r some copper(II) mixed-ligand complexes were determined by investigating t
he copper K-absorption edge using a Seifert x-ray generator and a 0.4 m Cau
chois-type bent crystal transmission spectrograph. The shift values are sug
gestive of a parabolic dependence on Z(eff) of copper. Using the method of
least squares, an expression Delta E = a + b(Z(eff)) + c(Z(eff))(2) was fou
nd to hold good for the dependence of Delta E on Z(eff) in the case of the
