Abstract
Originally suggested to function mainly in inflammatory situations, recent data have implied important roles for the cyclooxygenase-2 isoenzyme in rep roductive biologic processes, renal and neurologic function, and the antith rombotic activities of endothelial cells. As cyclooxygenase-2-specific inhi bitors have recently become available as analgesic and anti-inflammatory dr ugs, a comprehensive view of this rapidly evolving field is necessary to an ticipate both the potential therapeutic benefits and toxic effects associat ed with these agents.
