Ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogen transfer from (S)-alpha-deuterio-alpha-phenyle thanol [(S)-1] to acetophenone with catalyst 3 occurs with retention of deu terium at the alpha-carbon of the alcohol product whereas H/D scrambling oc curs with catalyst 2.
