Topic of fury is omnipresent in sixteenth century french tragedy. The exami
nation of theory on this notion reveals that it is always presented with a
double face: fury, or mania, is responsible of criminal actions, and divine
frenzy generates a creative discourse, poetic or prophetic. Fury in humani
st tragedy is also double: divine frenzy and war fury is virtually creative
, but can also be a murderous poison, when aimed against itself. Topic of f
ury is thus admirably suitable for the representation of religious troubles
in sixteenth century France.
