The decay of the neutron-rich isotope Bi-216, produced by proton-induced sp
allation at the PS Booster-ISOLDE facility, was investigated by beta - gamm
a gamma, alpha gamma coincidence and spect;rum-multiscaling measurements. A
new method for reducing isobaric contamination enabled to cover the unknow
n region "east" of Pb-208 for, the isobaric chain A=216. The half-life of t
he beta decay of Bi-216 was found as T-1/2 = 135 +/- 5 s. Its decay scheme
was extended and the possible shell model configurations are proposed.
