Stress among university faculty has received considerable treatment in rese
arch literature in the past decade in higher education, but very little stu
dy has been undertaken from a comparative perspective. This paper reports t
he results of a comparative study in measuring stress among university facu
lty in China and Japan using a questionnaire survey. It analyzes the relati
onship between stress and health in different age groups of the faculty and
the differences in the nature and structure of the stress between China an
d Japan. The research suggests that stress of Chinese and Japanese universi
ty faculty can be described as "social-transformation stress'' and "directi
on-conflict stress'', respectively.
