Chromosome manipulations can be carried out easily in fishes due to their e
xternal fertilization and embryogenesis. In recent years a great deal of re
search has been conducted on chromosome set manipulation (polyploidy, gynog
enesis and androgenesis) in a number of species. The rationale for this wor
k has been to produce sterile progeny for culture; for sex manipulation; an
d to produce highly inbred or cloned lines for crossbreeding for research p
urpose. Haploid, gynogenetic diploid, triploid and tetraploid genotypes hav
e been produced in a number of species and yet this research has been of li
ttle or no discernible benefit to the world-wide culture industry. Techniqu
es for induction and verification of chromosome set manipulation are review
ed and the potential applications of these are discussed.
