Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if the frequency that students w ere selected for all-state band in a mideastern state was independent of th e time of day that they performed. The sample for this study included the 6 47 woodwind and brass students (grades 10 through 12) who participated in t he final audition for the 1998 All-State Band. Chair placements were create d by ranking the raw scores of each student in each instrument category. Th e time of audition for both selected and nonselected students was analyzed using a 2x8 chi square test of independence. On the basis of the informatio n derived from tis study, it can be concluded that the selection of student s for participation in the 1998 all-state band was associated with the time of day that the students auditioned 22% of the time. From 9:00 a.m. to 10: 59 a.m., 54% of the students were selected to participate in the all-state band rather than the expected 32%. Conversely from 1:00 p.m. to 2:59 p.m., 14% of the students were selected to participate in the all-state band rath er than the expected 27%.
