Abstract
The dispersion equation for guided modes of a scalar asymmetric four-layer waveguide is derived. Periodicity of modal characteristics is established u nder the variation of the cladding thickness. The dependence of distributio n of the energy hows of various modes in the waveguide structure on the thi ckness of the guiding layers and cladding is investigated.
