Abstract
Basic principles of designing the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for an adv anced space-based system of ice monitoring in polar regions are addressed. An equation for the scan parameters providing gap-free observation of the e arth's surface in a wide (450-500 km) swath is provided. The basic paramete rs of the radar are estimated. The specifications on the spacecraft carryin g the radar are also considered.
