An array consisting of six neutron detectors has been constructed for measu
rement of neutron multiplicities in heavy ion reactions. The measurements a
re reported to demonstrate that. even with a modest array of six neutron de
tectors, it is possible to infer unambiguously the neutron multiplicity (up
to M = 4) of the reaction channel from the neutron fold distribution obtain
ed in coincidence with gamma-rays, if the array is calibrated with known re
action channels. The neutron multiplicity for the 991 keV gamma-ray produce
d in the two heavy ion reactions Cs-133(C-12,C-13, xn) has been determined
from this set-up-indicating that it deexcites levels in Pm-142. This is in
agreement with the excitation function measurements for the same reactions.
