A method to measure the Sr-90 soil specific activity in situ is described.
It is based on the count-rate determination in selected energy ranges of ha
rdware gamma- and total gamma- and beta-spectra. The energy ranges of the m
easurements were defined by a numerical simulation of the detector model. T
o test the proposed method a portable device was developed. The accuracy of
the Sr-90 soil specific activity measurements is 30% for a minimum detecta
ble activity of about 150 Bq/kg. The measurement data obtained by this tech
nique are presented and compared with the results of traditional radiochemi
cal methods. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
