The environments of 107 Th(IV) atoms in 93 oxygen-containing compounds were
studied using Voronoi-Dirichlet (VD) polyhedra. At high coordination numbe
rs of thorium atoms (CN greater than or equal to 6) the volume of their VD
polyhedra is almost independent of CNTh and comprises nearly 11.9(4) Angstr
om(3). In classical coordination polyhedra ThOn, ZrOn, and (UOn)-O-IV the l
inear dependence of their volume on CN is observed. At CN < 6 the volume of
VD polyhedron always exceeds the volume of the corresponding classical coo
rdination polyhedron; and the volume of VD polyhedra of metal A in complexe
s AO(n) at CNA < 6 increases.
