Formal kinetic relationships of dicyclopentadienylmagnesium formation in re
action of magnesium with cyclopentadiene in THF in the presence of titanium
derivatives as the catalysts were determined. The equilibrium constants an
d ethalpies and entropies of adsorption of Ti(II) and Ti(III) compounds on
the magnesium surface were determined. A number of intermediate reaction pr
oducts were identified by ESR spectroscopy. The mechanism of dicyclopentadi
enylmagnesium synthesis catalyzed by the titanium compounds was proposed.
