The magnetic susceptibility of silicon samples containing isolated gol
d impurities on substitutional sites in different charge states has be
en measured using a sensitive Faraday balance. A paramagnetic moment,
which could not be detected by electron paramagnetic resonance measure
ments, was found for the neutral gold impurity Au-0. There is no evide
nce for a paramagnetic moment of the charged impurities Au- and Au+. T
hese results are in agreement with a model given by Anderson and Watki
ns, and with recent measurements of the Zeeman effect and of the magne
tic circular dichroism of the absorption.
