Abstract
It is shown that the presence of the quantum group symmetry su(q) (2) in th e quantum Hall effect on the Poincare upper half plane governs the degenera cy of the lowest Landau level. It is also shown that the relation between t he degree of degeneracy and the cyclic representation of su(q)(2) appears i n accordance with q being a kth root of unity.
