Ea. Andreev et al., Energy transfer in grazing collisions of fast atoms with a monolayer of particles physically adsorbed on a metal surface, CHEM PHYS R, 18(7), 2000, pp. 1233-1242
Excitation of atoms constituting a physically adsorbed monolayer on a metal
surface upon their interaction with fast atoms (E-1=2-10 keV) at grazing c
ollisions (theta=1-5 degrees) is studied by analytical and numerical method
s. It is shown that the so scattered fast beams can generate one-dimensiona
l clusters of "hot" atoms in the vicinity of the surface, which move with e
nergies from similar to 0.1 to 10 eV along a normal to the surface and are
oriented to certain sites on it. It is suggested that these clusters be use
d in studying the dynamics of elementary heterogeneous processes with an an
gstrom space resolution.
