A hybrid volume modeling system architecture is proposed. The key architect
ural decision of the system design is based on the combination of volume re
presentations by voxel data and by real continuous functions (so-called F-r
ep). We discuss the concept of the volume model, hybrid voxel-function repr
esentation, system input in different forms, and possible applications. Sev
eral examples illustrate the proposed approach: femur reconstruction and mo
deling, hybrid metamorphosis, collision detection, and real-time volumetric
fly-through. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
