Jp. Aguilar, Rodents of two new middle miocene karstic localities from Eastern Pyrenees(South France) with a new species of Pseudofahlbuschia (Rodentia, Mammalia), ECLOG GEOL, 92(3), 1999, pp. 475-481
Two karstic fissure fillings (Baixas 200 & 201) have yielded for the first
time, teeth of a rare rodent genus in the Middle Miocene from Europe. This
genus Pseudofahlbuschia was formerly recorded only from Spain. P. catalauni
ca sp. nov. is different from the type-population of P. jordensis defined i
n Spain. Other rodents associated with the new species, among which Megacri
cetodon fournasi,M. minor, M. similis, indicate a Middle Miocene age for th
e localities, ranging between the Sansan and La Grive M (MN6/7) reference-l
evels. The presence of the genus shows a new distribution within the Megacr
icetodon. The large sized lineage is indeed much less abundant than it is i
n other localities, while it is the opposite for small sized species.
