We intend to discuss the concept of frontier in colonial Rio Grande do Sul,
suggesting an alternative understanding of southern settlement, supported
by eighteenth century parish records. It seems to be more appropriate if we
consider the colonial frontier space as a "moving frontier," with an inten
se human and economic circulation, within a diversified demographical conte
xt.
