A linear optimal controller is designed to implement multiple variable seri
es compensations in transmission networks of interconnected power systems.
The proposed controller is utilised to damp interarea oscillations and enha
nce power system damping. The effectiveness of the linear optimal controlle
r to properly control such multiple variable series reactances is demonstra
ted through digital simulation studies on a nine-bus power system with thre
e generators and three loads buses. The digital simulation studies are cond
ucted using a PSCAD/EMTDC software package. The simulation results show tha
t the controller contributes significantly to the damping of interarea osci
llations and the enhancement of power system damping.
