The photochemical reaction of (eta(5)-C5H5)Fe(CO)(2)I with (L)- and (D
)-tryptophan methyl ester in the presence of diisopropylamine in benze
ne leads to complexation of the (eta(5)-C5H5)Fe(CO)(2) moiety to the d
eprotonated indole nitrogen. This reaction takes place without detecta
ble (< 1%) racemization at C-alpha. The amino group of the complex for
med was acylated by treatment with p-chlorobenzoic acid and Fmoc-(L)-l
eucine in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide.
