The reaction of [Cp(OC)(2)Re](2) (Re = Re) (1) with P-4 in the temper
ature range -18 to 23 degrees C affords [{Cp(OC)(2)Re}(2)(mu-eta(2:2)
-P-2)] (2), a dinuclear diphosphadirhena bicyclobutane derivative with
a Re2P2 butterfly skeleton. Furthermore, 1 and 2 combine with formati
on of [CpRe(CO)(3)] (8) and [{Cp*(OC)Re}(3)(mu-CO)(2)(mu-eta(2:2:1)-P
-2)] (9) The replacement of P-4 by PhCCPh gives on its reaction with 1
the complexes 8, [Cp(OC)(2)Re(eta(2)-PhCCPh)] (10) and [Cp*(OC)Re(et
a 4-C4Ph4)] (11), a compound with a tetraphenyl cyclobutadiene ligand.
2 and 11 have been further characterized by X-ray crystal structure d
eterminations.
