S. Badiaga et al., Bacteraemic Haemophilus influenzae community-acquired pneumonia in non-immunocompromised adults: concerning two cases., MED MAL INF, 29(2), 1999, pp. 117-120
We report two cases of bacteraemic Haemophilus influenzae community-acquire
d pneumonia occurring in non immunocompromised adults, without underlying d
isease. The clinical presentation was an acute pneumonia in the first case
and a bronchopneumonia in the second case. In both cases, the patients were
clinically and radiologically cured after antibiotic therapy (ceftriaxone
2 g daily). Bacteremic H. influenzae pneumonia is rarely reported in health
y adults. Clinically, acute pneumonia due to H. influenzae is indistinguish
able from Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia. Although S. pneumoniae remain
the first etiological agent of bacterial pneumonia, empirical therapy with
a third-generation cephalosporin seems reasonable in case of severe acute
lobar pneumonia. (C) 1999 Elsevier; Paris.
