A comparative study of the beats of circular polarization generated by anis
otropic atomic collisions is carried out on the basis of theoretical calcul
ations for the states J = 1, 3/2, and 2 of neon atoms and ions excited by m
onochromatic laser radiation in xenon atmosphere. Contributions made by ord
inary alignment and higher polarization moments (octupole orientation and d
odecapole alignment) in the collisional generation of orientation and the s
ignal of beatings of circular polarization are compared. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nau
