We are presenting a design study of the new cold-time-of-flight spectromete
r to be built at the FRM-II. Monte Carlo techniques were used to optimize t
he Aux at the sample position and to calculate the elastic energy resolutio
n. A doubly focusing neutron guide is used to enhance the intensity on the
sample. Magnetic bearings and carbon fiber composite disks will give access
to very high chopper speeds, thereby considerably increasing the overall p
erformance of the instrument. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights res
