We study water dynamics in the eutectic DMSO-water mixture by incoherent qu
asielastic neutron scattering. Water individual motions are modelled by unc
oupled whole-molecule translations and rotations around the center of mass.
We determine water self-diffusion coefficients, residence times for jump d
iffusion and rotational relaxation times, previously related to the hydroge
n-bond "lifetime". We therefore quantify the perturbation of water dynamics
due to competing hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions with DMSO. (C) 2000
