The crystal structure and the magnetic state of polycrystal line samples of
the system LaMn1-xVxO3 were determined by X-ray diffraction, neutron diffr
action and magnetic measurements from 4.2 to 293 K. The crystal structure w
as shown to keep the same symmetry (space group Pnma) after the substitutio
n of Mn-ions by V. We observed a change of the magnetic state from a canted
antiferromagnetic state with antiferromagnetic moments along the a-axis an
d a ferromagnetic along the b-axis, for x < 0.4 to an antiferromagnetic ord
ering parallel to the b-axis for x > 0.9. The compounds inside of the trans
ition region 0.4 < x < 0.9 show a spin glass-like state. A magnetic phase d
