Abstract
The temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of crystal-field excitati ons in the slightly underdoped high-temperature superconductor (HoBa2Cu4O8) -O-18 has been investigated by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Our d ata show clear evidence for the opening of an electronic gap in the normal state at T* approximate to 220 K, far above T-c = 79 K. (C) 2000 Elsevier S cience B.V. All rights reserved.
