Abstract
The local vibrational density of states (VDOS) of the interfaces and the la ttice regions of nanocrystalline Pd were investigated by neutron spectrosco py. Hydrogen was used as a probe for the VDOS of the interfaces, whereas th e Pd spectra represent the scattering of the lattice regions. These two con tributions were separated from each other with neutron spin analysis. The n eutron spectra of the interfaces below 10 meV can be described with a linea r local VDOS whereas the lattice atoms show a quadratic Debye VDOS. (C) 200 0 Elsevier Science B.V.
