The internal structure of oscillatory shear layers occurring in rapidly rot
ating fluids is investigated. An analytical treatment is possible for flows
driven by a distribution of sources in an unbounded fluid. "Shear layers"
are shown to be envelopes of wave packets of inertial waves. The modificati
on of these layers by a magnetic field and a stable stratification are also
studied. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S1070-6631(00)00305-6].
