Penicillium spp, isolated from the sediments of ponds in continental Antarc
tica have been studied and compared with species obtained from similar envi
ronments in the Apennines of the Liguria region, in northwestern Italy. The
antibacterial activity exhibited by some strains was evaluated against sta
ndard strains using both liquid and solid media. The preliminary data sugge
st an antibacterial activity similar to beta-lactam antibiotics.
