J. Ziajka et al., IRON-CATALYZED OXIDATION OF BISULFITE AQUEOUS-SOLUTION - EVIDENCE FORA FREE-RADICAL CHAIN MECHANISM, Atmospheric environment, 28(15), 1994, pp. 2549-2552
Benzene and tertiary butanol have been used as radical scavengers to d
emonstrate the occurrence of sulphate radicals in the iron ion-catalys
ed autoxidation of bisulphite in aqueous solution. Ferric ions are rap
idly reduced to ferrus ions by HSO3- and a steady state is established
between both iron species for some time. A detailed reaction mechanis
m is presented. Computer simulations show that it can account for the
essential features of the reaction.
