The large number of radiocarbon dates for Iron Age sites in southern Africa
have been sub-divided into five different age categories and their distrib
ution plotted on maps covering South Africa and the adjacent area. These di
stribution maps, together with the previously presented variations in the n
umber of settlement sites through time, show a strong correlation with the
changes that occurred in the climate. The evidence confirms the positive re
lationship between temperature and rainfall over the past two millennia.
