Several skeletons have been found at the Mapungubwe complex of sites since
its discovery in the 1930s. Another grave was discovered at K2 in 1998, whe
n it began to erode out of Gardner's old profiles. The well-preserved remai
ns are those of a small child of about nine months. This infant was buried
in the great midden during the last phase of occupation at the site (Phase
Two), as is evident from the profile of the grave. An unusual feature of th
is grave is the number of large, turquoise beads found around the infant's
neck. Only one of these beads have previously been found at this site (on M
apungubwe Hill), and another one at Makahane.
