The results of sixteen studies on the effects of Fipronil (Frontline(R) Spr
ay and Spot on) against tick infestations are presented. Effective tick con
trol was observed in dogs for at least five weeks after treatment with the
splay preparations and for at least three weeks with the "Spot on" preparat
ion. For cats with tick infestations, both preparations resulted in effecti
ve tick control for two weeks after a single treatment. Weekly immersion in
water of treated dogs does not affect the duration of the efficacy of this
treatment, but shampooing reduces the beneficial effect to one to thr ee w
eeks. Fipronil kills ticks before the risk of transmission of borrelia is h
igh. The spectrum of activity of Fipronil includes Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicep
halus sanguineus and a number of other tick species.
