A kinetic method with a determination limit of 0.2 mu g/mL was develop
ed for determining sulfite ions. The method is based on the reduction
of iron(III)-1,10-phenanthroline or iron(III)-2,2'-dipyridyl complexes
with sulfite ions. For some high-purity inorganic salts, the sensitiv
ity of sulfite determination was improved using preconcentration by lo
w-temperature oriented crystallization. This enabled the detection lim
it of the SO32- anion to be lowered by 13-63 times.
