Introduction: The major aim of diagnostic and therapic efforts in blunt ren
al trauma is the preservation of renal function especially in children. The
re must be a close teamwork of pediatricians, radiologists and urologists i
n order to establish an effective conservative treatment to save a good fun
ctional result.
Case report: The case of a four year old girl with a blunt renal trauma gra
de 4 according to AAST is reported. A primary conservative treatment was fo
llowed by a secondary operative exploration after consolidation of the hema
toma. Postoperatively there was an improvement of renal function.
Conclusions: Even in pediatric cases with severe traumas of the kidney a pr
imary conservative treatment is often successful. Only a few patients need
a secondary operative treatment.
