Abstract
It is often claimed that the national minimum wage has been a major ca use of unemployment in France. However, econometric studies using time -series data have been unable to identify any substantial impact. In t his paper we analyse what happened to the employment of young persons using sectoral data following the 10% increase in the minimum wage tha t took place in June 1981, We find that there was a statistically sign ificant, negative effect on youth employment.
