The discrete Boltzmann models are used to study the spectral problems relat
ed to the one-dimensional plane wave propagation in monatomic gases which a
re fundamental in the nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics. The result
s show that the 8-velocity model can only describe the propagation of the d
iffusion mode (entropy wave) in the intermediate Knudsen number regime. The
4- and G-velocity models, instead, can describe the propagation of sound m
odes quite well, after comparison with the continuum-mechanical results.
