Making a computer club for Douglass Elemementary School required external h
elp and internal support. At the end of the first school year a small indep
endent community had grown surrounding such high-minded ideas as scaffolded
learning, self control, and community service, but by the beginning of the
next school year it was unclear if it could be sustained. We discuss how d
ifficult it can be to create a sustainable innovation. (C) 2000 Elsevier Sc
