The kinetics of the initial stages of the spreading process in binary
metallic systems with different types of component interactions was de
termined. The effects of temperature, drop weight, and mutual solubili
ty of the contacting liquid and solid phases on rates of spreading in
binary systems of tin and copper with metals of the iron family, and a
lso of tin with the intermetallic compounds Ni3Sn and Ni3Sn2, were inv
estigated, using a method in which drop was brought into contact with
a plate descending from above. The rate of displacement of the three-p
hase boundary in the spreading process was a power function of time, a
nd the difference of cosines of the quasi-equilibrium and dynamic cont
act angles varied exponentially with time. The method of analysis used
was suitable for treatment of data obtained under non-stationary cond
itions of the initial spreading process. The nature of contact interac
tions was in accord with phase equilibria in the systems with tin that
were investigated.
