Some information has been published in the literature describing pharmaceut
ical company assistance in providing medications for indigent patients. How
ever, few published reports have specifically indicated which disease state
s are most commonly encountered and which medications are in greatest need
in this patient population. This report describes the results of a chart re
view covering the first 6 months of operation of an indigent care clinic in
a metropolitan area in southern Alabama. The objective of the review was t
o gather patient demographics and identify the most common disease states e
ncountered and drugs prescribed. This information may be helpful to others
who are contemplating developing their own indigent care clinic.
