This paper presents the development of a control scheme for a multilevel di
ode-clamped converter connected in a series-parallel fashion to the electri
cal system such that it can compensate for deviations in utility voltage (s
ag, surge, and unbalance) and act as a harmonic and/or reactive current sou
rce for a load. New carrier-based multilevel pulsewidth modulation techniqu
es are identified to maximize switch utilization of the two back-to-back di
ode-clamped inverters that constitute the universal power conditioner. An e
xperimental verification for a six-level power conditioner is given.
