Melting and solidification of a Pb-Sn eutectic alloy have been observed dir
ectly using an in situ heating experiment in a high-voltage electron micros
cope (HVEM). Melting takes place preferentially at a Pb/Sn interface and gr
ain boundaries of Pb and Sn. Solidification takes place very quickly and th
e resultant eutectic microstructure changes drastically during subsequent c
ooling. It has been found that, at high temperature, grain boundaries of Pb
and Sn are segregated with Sn and Pb, respectively.
