The Yb radiative lifetime of 923 mu s has been determined by the extrapolat
ion to the zero concentration of Yb. Quenching of the Yb luminescence is ob
served in the Yb3+,Ce3+:CaGd4Si3O13 (Yb,Ce:CGS) crystals due to their intri
nsic defects and Ce3+ ions. The main quenching mechanism is the energy migr
ation through Yb ions to the defects with a micro-parameter C-DD(Yb-Yb) = 1
.0 x 10(-38) cm(6) s(-1), and the Yb3+ --> Ce3+ energy transfer with a micr
o-parameter C-DA = 5.5 x 10(-44) cm(6) s(-1).
