Abstract
The change in the phase of a light beam propagating in an optically dense e xtended medium is considered. A qualitative model is used to reveal the mec hanism behind the relation between spatial and spectral characteristics of light pulses. The self-action of a high-intensity pulsed beam under conditi ons of strong diffraction leads to the modulation of the phase in time. Thi s process is responsible for a variation in the carrier frequency of the pu lse.
