We report experimental observation of nonlinear all-optical switching of a
20-cm-long fiber Bragg grating. The grating is self-switched owing to the o
ptical Kerr effect and in the nonlinear regime shows a 20-dB increase in tr
ansmissivity. This increase is a marked improvement from the switching resu
lts obtained from shorter gratings. (C) 2000 Optical Society of America. OC
