Abstract
Ytterbium(III) triflate (10mol%) was found to catalyze the nitration of a r ange of simple fluoroarenes whilst minimizing the common problem of HF libe ration. For more electron deficient fluoroarenes, hafnium(IV) triflate and the ytterbium and scandium salts of triflidic acid (Tf3CH) were found to be significantly more effective catalysts.
