This study demonstrates a strong association between the the occurrenc
e of oro-facial lesions and HIV-1 seropositivity in a group of patient
s in Dar es Salaam. Among the different oro-facial lesions Kaposi's sa
rcoma seems to be the most frequent and the most important pathognomon
ic feature. Since some of the lesions occur fairly early in HIV infect
ion, a thorough and systematic examination of the ore-facial region ma
y provide an early clue for HIV infection.
